RedSky Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Offers Works by Lee Davis & Robert Hasselle

The RedSky Gallery in the Dilworth area of Charlotte, NC, will present an exhibit of works by nationally recognized abstract landscape painter Lee Davis and South Carolina ceramic artist Robert Hasselle, on view from Mar. 13 through Apr. 29, 2009.

As a third generation Miamian, Lee Davis literally grew up around the Everglades, spending much time there with his father, grandfather and great uncle. He recalls that the Everglades gave him an appreciation for environmentally sensitive areas. Davis has also lived in "some of the most beautiful and endangered areas in the United States" such as the Blue Ridge areas of Appalachia, the deserts of Arizona, New Mexico, and Western California, as well as the Salt Marsh areas of the Atlantic North East. He notes that these areas are "timeless, unique, and fleeting. It is a concept I attempt to capture with each painting."

Davis discovered early on a natural talent for drawing. He did not consider that art may be a career until attending an art festival in Coconut Grove, FL. He began painting and realized that painting, like drawing, came naturally. His work has been influenced by the work of Everglades painter George Buckner, who Davis studied with and enjoyed a close friendship with.

Robert Hasselle is a sculptor and potter who has worked in the art field for over forty years. He has an MFA in Sculpture from Tulane University and a BA in Philosophy and Art from Rhodes College. In the 1960s, Hasselle was on the faculty at Ohio State University where he ran the bronze foundry. In the 1970s, he was head of the sculpture department at the Cincinnati Art Academy where he started the ceramics program. In the 1980s, he studied architecture at the University of Cincinnati and worked in several architecture firms.

Hasselle's work has been included in the permanent collections of several museums including: the Huntington Museum in West Virginia, the Mobile Museum of Art, the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, OH, the Tulane University Collection, the Ohio State University Collection, and the Cincinnati Art Museum. Additionally, Hasselle has owned and operated two retail galleries in Cincinnati, Clifton Earthworks and Hasselle Pottery, where he maintained a studio and pottery school. In 2001, Hasselle moved to the Charlotte, area and currently operates a pottery school and studio in York, SC.

RedSky Gallery features original works on paper and canvas, sculpture, ceramic, glass, studio furniture, art-to-wear, jewelry, and more. Over 500 regional and national artists are represented at three gallery locations in Dilworth, Blakeney Town Center in South Charlotte and at their newest gallery space which just opened in the EpiCentre in Uptown Charlotte.
