The NC Arboretum in Asheville, NC, Features Works by Tim Barnwell

The NC Arboretum in Asheville, NC, is presenting the exhibit, On Earth's Furrowed Brow: The Appalachian Farm in Photographs, featuring photographs by Tim Barnwell, on view in the Education Center Gallery through May 31, 2010.

The history southern Appalachian farm culture comes alive in a new exhibit by acclaimed photographer and author Tim Barnwell at The North Carolina Arboretum. The exhibit showcases Barnwell's longtime exploration of the southern Appalachian region. He has spent a lifetime documenting the farm culture, visiting with and photographing the people of its isolated mountain enclaves. Here farmers, their lives and labors timed to the season, follow traditional ways of working passed down through the generations. Many are living as their parents and grandparents did, in close knit communities bound by heritage, kinship, and faith.

The acclaimed author of The Face of Appalachia, Barnwell once again turns an intelligent and compassionate eye toward rural America in this traveling exhibit based on his book, On Earths Furrowed Brow. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Appalachian Mountains, 30 black and white photographs provide a window onto a world that is quickly fading. Portraits of people in their homes and at work in the fields illuminate the richness and rhythms of everyday life. Capturing a culture that most people will never experience firsthand, Barnwell's technical mastery and unique vision put life and energy back into modern documentary photography.

The mission of The North Carolina Arboretum is to cultivate connections between people and plants.
