David Stanley

The TAG Main Gallery will come to life with illustrations from the North Carolina Society of Illustrators with images from within the world of sports. The exhibition, Sports Exhibited, features works by the following artists: Steven M. Cozart, Ed Fields, David Gaadt, Austin Harris, Marshall Lakes, Mark Spangenberg, David Stanley, Don Stewart, Kyle T. Webster, and Logan York.

The North Carolina Society of Illustrators was founded in 2004 as an association of both professional and aspiring illustrators to promote a high caliber of illustration and it's disciplines. Rooted in vocational solidarity and fellowship the NCSI has been a vibrant art community in the Triad area out of which it's members benefit from the talent, inspiration, and shared ideas within the group.

Sports Exhibited is the third major collaborative show since the NCSI's inception. The first, Play Ball - An Artistic Celebration of America's Favorite Pastime, featured over 70 works of art from illustrators across the nation and showed in 2005 at both the Marshall Gallery and the African American Atelier in Greensboro, NC. The second, Expedition - A Journey of Discovery, Triumph, and Transformation was an eclectic collection from fantasy and adventure to contemplative and inspirational images that showed in 2007 at the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro. Several of the group's members also exhibited at the Fayetteville Museum of Art in 2007 for the Bob Rector Art Invitational for Illustrators Exhibition as well as in number of national competitions and shows including the New York and Los Angeles Society of Illustrators annual exhibitions, Communication Arts, How, Print, Graphic, and Graphic Design USA.

The group remains active through figure drawing sessions and periodic social events, as well as frequent robust discussions and critiques in cyberspace around our work and ideas. The NCSI is based in Greensboro, NC.

Ross Holt

The exhibits, Foment and Tarleton's Quarter, feature photographs by Greensboro artist Ross Holt. Foment features a collection of intense, colorful, abstract images - slices of every day objects. Tarleton's Quarter offers a collection of Civil War reenactment photographs taken in the Triad area.

Holt's offers the following statement about his works, "I look for the abstract in the concrete. All my images are what the camera recorded on film; none are manipulated in the developing or printing process beyond occasional cropping. Of the images presented here, all are found; none are staged. All are prints from 35mm negatives. I use a Canon AT-1. I received as a high school graduation present way back when that camera model was new. For presentation, I work with a lab to enlarge images to 24"x16"."

"I see a great nexus between my photography and poetry," adds Holt. "I consider my images akin to William Carlos Williams's red wheelbarrow, things in the concrete world that most people pass by without a second look. I seek to make images that, as T.S. Eliot said about good poetry, communicate before they are understood. And in that communication, whether between photographer and viewer or among viewers of the same image, lies a connection which transcends the labels and categories that, in the concrete world, separate us."
