Hilton Head Art League Shows Works by Doreen Prince on Hilton Head Island, SC

Doreen Prince is the featured artist at the Hilton Head Art League Gallery in Pineland Station, on Hilton Head Island, SC, through Apr. 28. Her exhibition of pastels, titled, Mostly Landscapes, will include paintings of the low country, Cape Cod where she summers with husband Fred, and interesting locations captured in their travels, or of their native Canada.

Though Prince has studied watercolors, as well as pastels, pastels are her medium of choice because she "loves the rich colors and pure pigments of the pastel sticks, and the way pastels handle different sky and cloud formations."

Moving to Hilton Head Island as a full time resident in 1992, Prince actively began painting following a workshop with Joyce Nagel. Since then, she has taken numerous workshops to hone her skills with nationally well-known instructors like Doug Dawson, Madlyn Ann Woolwich and Martha Bator.

Prince's landscapes explode with her appreciation of nature coupled with a love of color. Her interest in photography taught her to really look at her surroundings, to think about composition, to see the patterns of sun and shadow, and to differentiate the quality of light in different parts of the world. The fascination she holds with trees from different regions is evident in the variety depicted in her paintings. From the rich autumn colors of the sugar maples in Quebec, to the tall pines and live oaks of the low country, her landscapes bring to life the rustle of the leaves in the breeze. Being a member of the Hilton Head Art League has enabled her to meet and work with other artists on the island. "It's an opportunity to learn from the works of others, and a chance to begin exhibiting my work," says Prince. She is also a member of the Society of Bluffton Artists and the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod. Prince has participated in several group shows, including the Evening of the Arts for the past four years, and the Art League's annual Art and Flowers Show. Her paintings are in private collections in Canada, Cape Cod, New York City, Atlanta, Augusta, Sarasota, California and the local area.

The Hilton Head Art League is a not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to promoting the visual arts in the community and enhancing the art skills of its members.

In addition to the Mostly Landscapes show, the gallery represents the work of over 100 local, Art League member artists. All artwork in the gallery is for sale.
