North Charleston Arts Festival Takes Place May 4-12

The City of North Charleston's annual Arts Festival takes place May 4 12, and features a free two-day Main Event on May 5 & 6th at the North Charleston Performing Arts & Convention Center Complex, in North Charleston, SC. The nine-day festival also includes a variety of free and ticketed individual events during the week, at various locations throughout the city (Events Schedule).

Local and regional performers, adult & youth art competitions, a photography exhibition, a statewide fine craft competition, a gem & mineral show, arts & crafts vendors, and food vendors make up the festivities. Individual events will include children's programs, concerts, theater, block parties, workshops and more. The festival concludes with a Grand Finale & Gala featuring the Peking Acrobats from the People's Republic of China.

The two-day Main Event will be held at the North Charleston Performing Arts and Convention Center Complex. A partial listing of entertainment acts scheduled during the two-day event include: Anonymity Modern Dance, Robert Ivey Ballet, Mandrake's Magic, Grey Seal Puppets, Hokus Pokus, Carolina Line Dancers, Adande African Drum & Dance, Gary Irwin Cajun Music, Columbia Marionettes, De Gullah Enna Pry, Roger Bellow, Del Rae Jazz, Abe White Jazz Sax, and Charleston Community Band. Parking during the Main Event is free.

Two new features of the Festival are a (ticketed) Grand Finale & Gala event featuring the Peking Acrobats, and the Statewide Fine Craft Competition entitled Palmetto Hands, which is a free event of the two-day Main Event.

The North Charleston Cultural Arts Program and the South Carolina Artisans Center, in Walterboro, SC, have joined in the creation of the South Carolina Palmetto Hands, a new statewide juried craft exhibition. A collection of works from artisans living in South Carolina, this fascinating exhibition will include an array of fine arts and crafts: baskets, jugs, glassware, quilts, dulcimers and psalteries, pottery and ceramics, painted silk, woodcarvings, weaving, toys, candles, tile art, sandals, jewelry, gourds, brooms and so much more.

Discussions are currently underway to collaborate with the SC State Museum to coordinate an optional traveling component that will tour the state. Interested artists can contact the North Charleston Cultural Arts Program at 843/745-1087 for more information and to request a prospectus. Cash Awards totaling $5,000 will be awarded.

The Peking Acrobats will be featured at the May 12th Grand Finale & Gala event.  Hailing from the People's Republic of China, the Peking Acrobats have been diplomats of their spirited culture for decades. Together, these young men and women who make up this acrobatic troupe will win the hearts and minds of the audience with their precision acrobatic routines, amazing balancing feats, lively clown acts and displays of tremendously focused strength. Their unique charm and expressions, along with their extraordinary colorful costumes, will provide lasting memories for everyone who experiences this modern-day kaleidoscope of entertainment and wonder.

This spectacular performance will be followed by a Gala in the Grand Ballroom of the Performing Art Center & Convention Center Complex, featuring entertainment by Parati. Don't miss a wonderful evening of entertainment, music, dinner and dancing. The event is black-tie or creative cocktail attire. The event takes place from 6:30 to 11:30 pm. Tickets are $40 per person or $350 for a table of ten (which includes parking pass). Tickets are limited and must be purchased by 5pm on May 7.
