North Charleston Arts Festival Events Schedule

Friday, May 4
Children's Festival: Pre-school children will delight to games, art activities, and the lively Puppet People's production of Friends at 10 & 11am. Groups must pre-register, call 843/745-1028. Individuals may register on site. Park Circle, 9am-Noon. Free.

Teen Giant Puppet Creation: Teens are invited to create a 12-foot puppet for the MAIN EVENT, led by artist Phillip Hyman. Supplies provided. Pre-registration preferred, call 843/745-1087. North Charleston Performing Arts Center & Convention Center Complex (Courtyard Area), 4:30-6:30pm. Free parking and admission.

Saturday, May 5

A Night of Magic: R&B concert and dance featuring old school music by DJ Anthony Baxter. Surprise national recording artist. Co-sponsored by MAGIC 101.7. North Charleston Performing Arts Center & Convention Center Complex (Ballroom). 8-10pm. $15 (includes parking pass).

Monday, May 7
Dino-Fest: (M-F, May 7-11) A dinosaur-themed carnival for 3-4 year old students in Otranto-area daycare/preschool facilities. Reservations in advance call 843/572-4094. Otranto Road Regional Library. Free.

Our Heritage: African American poetry and crafts with Bessie M. F. Simmons and Violet Saylor, members of the Alston Heritage Foundation. Cooper River Memorial Library, 10-11:30am. Free.

Charleston Street Vendors: A performance of Gullah heritage capturing the culture of the Charleston Marketplace featuring Veronica Gaillard & New Beginnings (As seen on PBS & Reading Rainbow). Cooper River Memorial Library, 4-5pm. Free.

Charleston Metropolitan Civic Orchestra: Symphony concert highlighting the popular Bizet, featured in Disney's Bad News Bears, with Amos Lawrence as soloist. Selections will also include Rumanian Folk Dances by Bartok and other selections. Manny Alverez-Director. North Charleston Performing arts Center & Convention Center Complex (Ballroom), 7-9pm. Tuesday, May 8
Gullah Tales and Music: storytelling with Carlie Townes and the art of the drum by Halim La Dream, co-founders of the Gullah Geechee People Foundation. Cooper River Memorial Library, 10-11:30am. Free.

Storytime: Hey kids, do you want to hear your favorite stories? Come in for a special story time. For more information, call 843/764-2377. Books A Million, Northwoods Mall, North Charleston, 10:30-11:30am. Free.

Sleeping Beauty: Becky's Box of Puppets performs a delightful program enacting the Sleeping Beauty story, audience interaction and fun for all. Dorchester Road Regional library, 7-7:45pm. Free.

Poetry Readings: Barnes & Noble hosts readings by local writers followed by an open mic component in which festival-goers may read aloud their original works or favorite poetry. For more information call 843/527-2269. Barnes & Noble Bookstore, N. Chas., 7-8pm. Free.

Celtic & Medieval Musical Concert: Beautiful melodies and traditional tunes by the popular Celtic group, Tammerlin, of Jacksonville, FL. St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 7-8pm. Free.

Jazz Concert: Featuring sultry Ann Caldwell as she serenades you with favorites from Duke Ellington to Aretha Franklin. Evening includes a surprise national recording artist. Clarion Hotel (Ballroom), North Charleston, 8-10pm $5.

Wednesday, May 9
The Art of Architecture: Learn more about the buildings in our city, and who designed and built them. Includes a hands-on workshop. Cooper River Memorial Library, 10-11am. Free.

Bully An Adventure with Theodore Roosevelt: Actor Buren Martin is transformed into the likeness and personality of the beloved President, Teddy Roosevelt. Performed by Baille Players of Southeastern Theatrical Productions. Sterett Hall Auditorium, 4-5pm. Adults $5, Students Free.

Murder at Four Mile Hill: Come and learn about North Charleston's own antebellum serial killers, John and Lavonia Fisher. A reader's theater where the audience becomes the players. Dorchester Road Regional Library, 7-8pm. Free.

Thursday, May 10
The Life & Music of Ludwig Van Beethovan: Actor/pianist Stephen Eager chronicles Beethoven's life from his interview with Mozart in 1787 to the first performance of his 9th Symphony in 1824. Sterett Hall Auditorium, 10-11am. Adults $5, Students Free.

Betrayed Interactive Dinner Theater; Audience members are asked to participate in this comedy/murder-mystery as they attempt to untangle the treachery of this live soap opera. This original play by Paradigm Entertainment Productions of Norfolk, VA, will be served up along with a delicious dinner in gracious surroundings. North Charleston Performing arts Center & Convention Center Complex (Ballroom), 7-10pm. $20 (includes parking pass). Limited audience size - tickets must be purchased by 5pm on Sunday, May 6.

Open Door Poetry Slam for Young Adults: High and Middle-Schoolers are invited to perform their poetry before an audience. Join the fun and excitement of live poetry. Cash Prizes $50-first, $30-second, $20-third. Winners will be chosen by the audience. Dorchester Road Regional Library, 6:30-7:30pm. Free.

Friday, May 11
Fannie!: A one woman play featuring DonnaLee Williams as Fannie Lou Hamer, a key player in the fight for Civil Rights and the passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Felix C. Davis Auditorium at Park Circle, 2-3:15pm. Free.

Amateur Poetry Reading and Workshop: Calling all poets, join Eugene Platt for poetry readings and discussions/workshop on getting your poetry published. For more information, call 843/764-2377. Books A Million, N. Chas. 7-8pm. Free.

Olde Village Block Party & Beach concert: Featuring The Catalinas, one of the more popular Carolina Beach Music Bands. Dance the shag and enjoy quaint shops and restaurants. Olde North Charleston Village, 7-10pm. Free.

Saturday, May 12
8K Run, 3 Mile Walk, Wheelchair Race: Annual event in conjunction with the North Charleston Arts Festival. Begins at 7:55am at Park Circle and runs through surrounding neighborhoods. Call 843/ 745-1028 for registration details.

A Mellow Taste of North Charleston: Bring family and friends for a day filled with fun and a live band as several areal restaurants provide samples of their famous dishes in a festival like atmosphere on the grounds. Otranto Road Regional Library, 11am-2pm. Free.

Let's Party: Kids of all ages come and join us for a surprise party with a special friend. For more information, call 843/764-2377. Books A Million, North Charleston, 3-4pm. Free.

Whirlin' Watercolors: Bring your entire family to experience the sights and sounds of the sea. Join in creating an undersea mural painting. Experience the Caribbean with the popular Island Trio Band (12-2pm). Name a mascot and win a season pass for the new Whirlin; Waters Adventure waterpark. Call 843/795-4FUN for more information. Wannamaker County Park (Cabana Area), 10am-2pm. Park Admission $1 each.

Gospel Extraordinare: a pre-Mother's Day concert featuring the Mighty Echoes of North Carolina, Anita Prather Aunt Perlie Sue the Chicken Dinner Lady, Bethel R.E. Church Male Choir, the Traveling Echoes, the Gospel Stars and the Royal Baptist Church Male Choir & other guest. Sterett Hall Auditorium, 6-9pm. $5 advance, $7 at the door, $2 child.

Festival Gala & Grand Finale: An elegant and festive social evening commencing with a 6:30pm reception followed by The Unmasking of an Evening in the Orient featuring the Peking Acrobats hailing from the People's Republic of China. This spectacular performance will be followed by a Gala in the Grand Ballroom featuring entertainment by PARATI. Don't miss a wonderful evening of entertainment, music, dinner and dancing. Black-tie or Creative Cocktail attire, North Charleston Performing arts Center & Convention Center Complex, 6:30-11:30pm. $40 per guest, $350 Table of 10 (includes parking pass). Visual Delights
May 5-12

Enjoy hundreds of fine creations forming a kaleidoscope of visual delight. South Carolina Palmetto Hands, a statewide juried craft exhibition, Adult Art Competition and Show, and Photography Competition and Show. Many items available for purchase. Convention Center Complex, 9am-5pm daily. Free admission and parking.
