Winthrop University in Rock Hil, SC, Offers Multiple Art Opportunities All on One Sunday Visit

Apr. 21, 2002, marks another fine Sunday to enjoy the historic environs of Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC, and to view the 14th Annual Undergraduate Juried Student Exhibition. Open to the public beginning Apr. 11, the exhibition will culminate on Apr. 21 at 3pm, with "The Patrons of the Gallery Awards Reception" in Rutledge Gallery.

This year's exhibition represents some of the best creative work from the major disciplines offered by Winthrop University's Department of Art and Design. As in years past, students will present exceptional examples of graphic design, jewelry and metals, ceramics, painting and drawing, interior design, sculpture and photography. The students' work will be juried by Brad Thomas, gallery director at the William H. Van Every, Jr. Gallery at Davidson College. Immediately following the reception, from 4 - 7pm, will be the 2nd Annual Student and Faculty Open Studio Fair - a rare opportunity to catch a behind-the-scenes glimpse of a variety of working environments and to see the art work of faculty and students in progress.

Earlier on Apr. 21, at 1:30pm, will be a slide presentation and lecture in Rutledge Auditorium by internationally acclaimed artist Xu Bing whose installation entitled Word Play is currently being exhibited at the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC. Xu Bing was born in Chongqing, China in 1955 and grew-up in Beijing. He studied printmaking at the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing and received an MFA in 1987. In 1990 he moved to the United States and currently lives in Brooklyn, NY. Using language as both subject and medium, Xu Bing's installations explore connections between his native Chinese culture and American culture.

While on campus, visitors will also have the opportunity to view additional works as the result of the academic year's near conclusion and the completion of Art and Design students' projects. In the Edmund D. Lewandowski Student Gallery, in McLaurin Hall, will be the Foundations Area Student Exhibition featuring 2 and 3-dimensional assignments and projects. This exhibit will remain on view throughout the summer.

Outside of McLaurin Hall will be the Annual Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition featuring advanced student works, created under the direction of Winthrop artist/ instructor Shaun Cassidy. These site-specific installations and experimental sculptural forms are designed to interact with the landscape of the campus. The exhibit will be located on the exhibition grounds which surround Rutledge Building and McLaurin Hall.

Nearby, visitors will also enjoy viewing the work of MFA candidates, Scott McCullough and Daingerfield Ashton which comprise the MFA Thesis Exhibition. McCullough's work will be featured in the Elizabeth Dunlap Patrick Gallery located in the Rutledge Building while Ashton's exhibition, entitled Chaos, will be an off-campus installation at 153 E. White Street in downtown Rock Hill.
