Hickory Museum of Art in Hickory, NC, Features Works by Norman Rockwell

Norman Rockwell, considered by many to be America's most loved and respected social commentator and historian, was born in New York City in 1894. Fascinated by the world around him, he started to record his childhood experiences in drawings and paintings. He was admitted to the prestigious Chase School of Applied Arts at age l4, to the National Academy of Design at age 15, and the New York Student's League at age 16. Fully accredited at age 19, he began serving as art director for Boy's Life magazine. By age 22 he had done the first series of the now famous covers for the Saturday Evening Post. Rockwell's association ended with the Post in 1963 after 47 years. However he continued to accept assignments from magazines and advertisers until his death in 1978.

Norman Rockwell: Lithographs from the Powers Collection makes its only stop in North Carolina at the Hickory Museum of Art in Hickory, NC, and will be on view through May 25, 2003. This traveling exhibition from a private collector from Cheney, WA, features images used on the covers of the Saturday Evening Post and Poor Richard's Almanac, as well as the 1940's editions of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckelberry Finn. Rockwell interprets cultural types from the middle America with images that reflect character, wonder, amusement, and reflection.

Many of Rockwell's oils, which he painted for books, magazines and advertisements were destroyed by fire. He was urged to reproduce some of his earlier works as lithographs. Works included in this exhibition have not been available for many years, one of which is the first lithograph ever executed by Rockwell which he titled Spelling Bee.
