Marcel Scheiner Gallery in Hilton Head, SC, Features Works by Mark E. Flowers

Mark E. Flowers' artwork has traveled from Columbia, SC, where it was on view at Columbia College, to Hilton Head Island, SC, to the Marcel Scheiner Gallery. The new exhibition titled, Visual Vocabulary, will feature more than twenty mixed media paintings. The exhibition will be on view through Apr. 25, 2003.

Flowers hasn't exhibited his art on Hilton Head Island since he lived in Bluffton, SC, from 1979 to 1991. There he and his wife, Kristy Higby, raised two sons, and were involved in the art community of Bluffton, Hilton Head and Savannah, GA. Since leaving the Lowcountry, Mark and Kristy have lived in Mercersburg, PA. They teach art at Mercersburg Academy, a college preparatory boarding school.

Flowers' offers the following about his work,"Throughout my life, I have made use of images to clarify my relationship with the world. The repeated symbols I use are a 'visual vocabulary' that create an ongoing dialogue with myself and anyone willing to participate. Images such as the rock, reflecting to childhood memories, the tornado that becomes the bowl that becomes the circle symbolize growing older. As anyone does in seeking what the world means to them, I am seeking the same and sharing it with the viewer visually."

"In recent years," Flowers adds, "I have been concerned with the shape of the work as well as the image itself. My interests have always cycled from the purely sculptural back to the traditional illusionary formats. The latest works seek a blance between the two by painting on manipulated surface and attaching ready-made objects."
