New Exhibit and Symposium at Museum of York County in Rock Hill, SC

Step back 150 years in the Carolina Piedmont when a major part of female education included plain and fancy needlework. The exhibition, Virtue Leads and Grace Reveals: Embroideries and Education in Antebellum South Carolina, on display at the Museum of York County (MYCO) in Rock Hill, SC, explores the techniques, education and purposes of the antique embroideries. The exhibit will be on view through July 20, 2003.

Sewing samplers was a common practice for females in antebellum South Carolina. Virtue Leads and Grace Reveals provides an intriguing and previously unexplored perspective on the role of women in the early history of the Carolina Piedmont.

Over 20 samplers from the Carolina Piedmont dating from the early to mid-nineteenth century will be on display, many for the first time. Visitors will also see examples of regional needle -work, tools, art supplies and awards of merit.

In addition to the antique samplers and supplies, a recreated furnished schoolroom will display writing implements, maps, textbooks, musical instruments, proper female school clothing of 1840 and interactive components for visitors.

A catalog of the exhibit containing the newest research on embroideries and teachers academies in the Carolina Piedmont is available.

In conjunction with this fascinating exhibit, a Sampler Symposium will be held Apr. 4 - 6, 2003 at MYCO. Hear the research based on the study of embroideries, teachers and academies and visit the historic settings for these academies as well as work the motifs and stitches from these antique samplers. Charts and kits of three samplers will be available for purchase. For additional program information and registration fees call 803/329-2121.
