Sumter Gallery of Art and Patriot Hall Performing Arts Center in Sumter, SC, Features Group Exhibition with Focus on Space

The new Sumter Gallery of Art and Patriot Hall Performing Arts Center in Sumter, SC, is presenting the exhibition, Space Revisions, New Works for A New Space, which features works by students, alumni, and friends of Winthrop University's Department of Art and Design in Rock Hill, SC. The exhibition, conceived and curated by Tom Stanley, Director of Winthrop University Galleries, is a collaborative project of The Sumter Gallery of Art, Winthrop University and The Sumter County Cultural Commission. The exhibition will be on view through May 13, 2003.

Stanley selected undergraduate, graduate, alumni and friends of Winthrop University's Department of Art and Design who would be able to respond to the new and existing spaces of the new Sumter Gallery of Art and Patriot Hall Performing Arts Center. The Sumter Gallery of Art has recently moved into a renovated 24,000 sq. ft. space adjoined to the existing Patriot Hall Performing Arts Center. The "new space" includes a 12,000 sq. ft. art education center and approximately 12,000 sq. ft. of exhibition space.

The participants are exceptional young and innovative artists, many of whom have exhibited regionally and nationally. The selected artists will help create a setting for the "space" in which to view their works, but also, to draw attention to the excellent environment for the art that Sumter has to offer the state and the region. Space Revisions, New Works for a New Space will feature work that has been created for site-specific installations and/or mini-exhibitions that relate to the spatial requirements or needs of the gallery and other exhibit/performance areas.

Sumter has recently been described by Jeffrey Day, art critic at The State newspaper, as, "a hot-bed for contemporary art" and has developed a reputation throughout the Southeast for presenting "cutting edge" art concepts which included the Accessibility projects that featured installation and other site-specific public art exhibited on Sumter's historic Main Street. The Accessibility projects have been considered as one of the "top ten" art events in South Carolina over the last two years. "The collaborative project, Space Revisions, with Tom Stanley and Winthrop University will help the Sumter Gallery of Art re-define local perceptions of 'art' and provide the participating artists an opportunity to explore the 'creative-process' in adapting and creating work for the new gallery space," states Peggy Chilcutt, Artistic Director, Sumter Gallery of Art.

Artist participating in the exhibition include: Petra Carroll (NC), Shaun Cassidy (GB), Chris Clamp (SC), Reed Elliott (LA), Jennifer Gilomen (NC), Belinda Goodwin (NC), Kaminer Haislip (SC), John Hill (SC), Kelly Keith (SC), Paul Metheny (SC), Frank McCauley (SC), Mark McLeod (SC), Beth Melton (SC), Jon Prichard (SC), Jon Rajkovich (MI), Peggy Rivers (SC), Caroline Rust (SC), Kathe Rice Stanley (SC), and Adam Walls (SC).

Work being presented include: sculpture, sculptural installations, site-specific installations, drawing, painting, collage, performance art, and mixed media wall installation.

The exhibition is a collaborative effort of Tom Stanley, Director of Winthrop University Galleries; Peggy Chilcutt, Artistic Director, Sumter Gallery of Art; and Martha Greenway, Executive Director, Sumter County Cultural Commission.
