The Wells Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Gary Gowans

Water and Oil is an exhibition of new works by Gary Gowans which will be featured at the Wells Gallery, in Charleston, SC, from May 1- 12, 2003.

Gowans graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles and began his career as a freelance illustrator for Cruising World and the Wall Street Journal. Gowans continued his freelance work for over fifteen years with a number of other national sailing magazines including Sailing World. When asked what inspires him to paint, the artist offered, "the desire to capture that magic moment of a place or situation that through my lifetime of experiences has particular meaning to me or just captures my fancy."

From the beautiful moonlit skies reflecting on the water to incredibly painted nautical scenes one can tell Gowans' love and passion for painting the shoreline. Having grown up in Florida and completed his first painting of a sail boat at the age of eight, Gowans began his formal art career after serving as an Air Force Pilot during the Vietnam War.

Gowans' love for the water and boating has been an inspiration to his painting. All of his works are full of energy and the attention to detail in each painting is what keeps his work fresh and always new. He states that each piece is a learning experience. "For me, every painting is really a self portrait. The choice of subject matter, style of execution, amount of detail, tells more about the artist than words could ever do."

Whether a collector of Gowans or not, everyone will be taken in by the splendor and wonder of his work.
