Transylvania Community Arts Center in Brevard, NC, Features Two New Exhibitions

Two new exhibits are currently on view at the Transylvania Community Arts Center in Brevard, NC, through May 1, 2004. The Brevard Sculpture Project features sketches, studies and other preliminary work by eight Transylvania County artists who are creating original wildlife sculptures for downtown Brevard. The Second High School Competition, presented by the North Carolina Museum of Art, features paintings and mixed media works of art that were inspired by the museumıs collection.

The Brevard Sculpture Project is an independent, public art initiative that will culminate in a "sculpture trail" around downtown Brevard. Twelve life-size sculptures depicting native wildlife are being created by diverse artisans in Transylvania County, using steel, bronze, wood or stone. The Project also will include a large sculpture of musical instruments, paying tribute to the influence and significance of music to Transylvania County. The Project is being made possible by Brevard City Council, the Community Focus Foundation and individual donors like you.

The Brevard Sculpture Project exhibit features artists renderings of the animals to be depicted in the Project, including an elk, bob cat, fox, bear, white squirrels, mountain lion, raccoons, an eagle, red wolf, deer, ravens and monarch butterflies. Also on display are photographs of works in progress, news clippings and other informational pieces that have appeared throughout the process. Artists featured in the exhibit include sculptors Aaron Alderman, Steve Fox, Christine Kosiba, Tim Murray and Kathryn Wilson, blacksmiths Richard Merrill and Chris Worley and painter and printmaker Ann DerGara, who has spearheaded the Project.

The North Carolina Museum of Art's Second High School Competition is a traveling show featuring work by students from across North Carolina. Nearly fifty junior and senior high school students submitted entries for the competition, which was designed to challenge young artistsí thinking about the museumís collection. Students after visiting the museum or viewing paintings on the museumıs website, produced a work of art and an accompanying essay in response to an independent study of one favored work.

Of the twenty-two winning entries, seventeen works shoed that students were most intrigued by the contemporary collection. One student highlighted the mummy covering found in the Egyptian Gallery, and four entries were inspired by works found in the European collection. Expertly guided by superb teachers, student artists brought forth a body of work signifying a talented group of emerging artists.

The Second High School Competition features two-dimensional works by students from Apex High School, Cary High School, Chapel Hill High School, Freedom High School in Morganton, and Pinecrest High School in Southern Pines.
