Hilton Head Art League on Hilton Head Island, SC, Offers Annual Art & Flowers Festival

The Annual Hilton Head Art League Art & Flowers Festival will be held on Apr. 24, 2005. This year the event will be held at a new location, the Country Club of Hilton Head in Hilton Head Plantation, Hilton Head Island, SC. The event presents artwork by 30 artists, each accompanied by a fresh flower arrangement designed to interpret or compliment the art.

Don Nagel

The featured artist at this year's show is Don Nagel, a well-known pastel artist and art instructor. The painting by Nagel is, of course, a pastel, titled, Mirrored Harbor. The floral arrangement accompanying his painting will be designed by his wife, Joyce, also a well-known pastelist. Recently, Don and Joyce have teamed up to give exciting duo workshops called, "Two Points of View or there's more than one way to look at a landscape."

Don Nagel says of his work, "When most people hear the 'pastel,' they think of pale, chalky color. The pastel palette can be as intense or as muted as the artist wishes. The colors in our world are constantly changing: light, dark, warm, cool, direct light or shadow - the combinations are endless. In my landscapes, I strive to create a feeling of depth on the two dimensional surface with the intense color and contrast to bring objects forward and muted colors to make objects recede."

There will be two lunch seatings at this event: 11am-1pm and 1:30-3:30pm. The price of the luncheon is $35 and advance reservations are required. Walk-throughs (without lunch) are just $6 and can be done between the hours of 2-4pm. Tickets for the walk-through can be purchased at the door the day of the event.

A fashion show by Tradewinds Ladies Apparel of Pineland Station will be held during the luncheons under the direction of Sylvia Overcast. Chairperson for the Festival is Ann Utley.

Reservations for the luncheon must be made by Apr. 15, 2005, and checks mailed to Cecilia Shuck, 30 Oakman Branch Rd, HHI, SC 29928. The event is a regular rite of spring and very popular. People attend in their Spring finery, with colorful hats and floral prints. "The new location will increase our capacity, " says Art League President, Cecilia Shuck. "However, given the popularity of this event, it's a good idea to make your reservations early."

Other artists invited to participate in the Art & Flowers Festival include: Diane Bass, Betty Caffrey, Joanna Chalson, Cynthia Chiapetta, Polly Cronin, Jane Dent, Jo Dye, Vickie Bailey Ebbers, Susan Ellzey, Cheryl Eppolito, Helen Evans, Joan Grolimond, Anne Hakala, Jack Huddle, Donna Ireton, Clay Kittinger, Marsha Leinberger, DJ Murray, Nancy Nelson, Bob Pape, Kathy Rann Perry, Mary Ann Putzier, Eliza Ranney, Liz Rufenacht, Kitty Sivertson, Doc Slagle, Bob Weissman, and Nancy Wittke.
