Upstairs Gallery in Tryon, NC, Offers Exhibits
of Figurative Work and Pinhole Photography
The Upstairs Gallery in Tryon, NC, is presenting new exhibits
of figurative work and pinhole photography which will be on view
through May 21, 2005.
Who We Are: The Figure in the 21st Century introduces Carolyn DeMerit, photography, Judy Glantzman, mixed media, Val Lyle, sculpture, and Ann Ropp, watercolor. The exhibit is curated by Connie Bostic, a painter and art critic from Asheville, NC. The Lensless View: Contemporary Pinhole Photography is curated by Diana H. Bloomfield, a fine art photographer and teacher. In addition to Bloomfield, the artists in the exhibit are Pinky/MM Bass, Rebecca Sexton Larson, Scott McMahon, Christopher Sims, Sarah Van Keuren and Sam Wang.
The artists in both shows are exhibiting in the Upstairs Gallery for the first time.
Carolyn DeMerit lives in Charlotte, NC, where
she is both a photographer and film maker. She is in numerous
collections including the North Carolina Museum of Art, Mint Museum
of Art and National Museum of Women in the Arts.
Judy Glantzman lives in New York City where she has had one-person
exhibits in the Gracie Mansion Gallery and the Dactlyl Foundation
gallery. Other solo shows have been in Chicago, Los Angeles, Aspen
and Miami. Glantzman was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2001.
Val Lyle lives in Bristol, TN, but is represented by the Figurative Gallery in LaQuinta, CA. Ann Ropp lives in Johnson City, TN, and exhibits throughout the United States; she is in the collections of the New York Public Library, the Evansville Museum of Arts and Science, Evansville, IN, and the St. James Cavalier Centre for Creativity on the island of Malta.
Pinky/MM Bass is a well known pinhole photographer from Fairhope, AL, who has had many solo exhibits in the Southeast and group exhibits all over the country, including in major museums such as the High Museum and SECCA. Bass's work has been included in books and featured on public TV.
Diana H. Bloomfield has been an exhibiting photographer for more than 20 years, winning numerous awards for her images. She specializes in pinhole photography and "alternative" (i.e., 19th century) photographic printing techniques. She lives in Raleigh, NC, where she teaches photography at the NCSU Crafts Center.
Rebecca Sexton Larson was named the Photographer Laureate of the City of Tampa this year. She has been in more than 50 exhibits in Florida and is in many collections there.
Scott McMahon works mostly with pinhole cameras and is currently a graduate student at the Massachusetts College of Art, Boston. He has exhibited throughout the United States and is featured in the book Pinhole Photography by Eric Renner.
Christopher Sims has an MFA from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and lives in Mebane, NC. He has exhibited from New York to Texas and is the recipient of many impressive awards.
Sarah Van Keuren teaches at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and has led pinhole workshops in the East, New Mexico, Chicago and Finland. Her photography is widely exhibited and is in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the National Museum of American Art.
Sam Wang is the Alumni Distinguished Professor of Art at Clemson University. He has exhibited extensively in solo, two- and three-person and invitational exhibits in the United States and abroad and is in many public and corporate collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University, the Seattle Art Museum, the Mint Museum, the High Museum, the University of Notre Dame Art Museum and the Chase Manhatten Collection.
Wang and Bostic will conduct the Upstairs Gallery's "Walk & Talk" tour of the exhibits on Apr. 10, at 2pm.
