Guilford College in Greensboro, NC, Features Faculty Exhibition

Guilford College in Greensboro, NC, is presenting its Biennial Faculty Exhibition at the Guilford College Art Gallery, located in Hege Library, featuring works by Guilford's Art Department Faculty through May 5, 2006.

In conjunction with the college's theme-year focus on Spirit & Spirituality, the artists will discuss their thoughts on spirituality and the creative process in a panel discussion on Apr. 13, at 7:30pm. Both the exhibition and discussion offer opportunities to consider new developments in the work of these artists. A range of media including painting, sculpture, photography, and ceramics will be exhibited.

Faculty exhibitors include: Heea Crownfield (mixed media), Maia Dery (photography), Todd Drake (painting), David Newton (sculpture), Roy Nydorf (sculpture & printmaking), Charles Tefft (ceramics), and Adele Wayman (painting).

Heea Crownfield

Heea Crownfield's recent work embodies an ongoing engagement with process and nontraditional materials, exploring layering, accumulation, and the sensuous as metaphors of embodiment. A Visiting Assistant Professor of Art at Guilford College, she earned her MFA from Clemson University and her BA with high honors and departmental honors in Art and Religious Studies from Guilford College.

Maia Dery

A Visiting part-time Lecturer teaching photography, Maia Dery earned her BA from UNC-Chapel Hill and an MALS from Duke University, and also studied at the Maine Photographic Workshop. Her photographs have been published in magazines and books, and she is the author of An Adventure Guide to the Triangle. Dery will be exhibiting black and white photographs depicting shorelines from around the United States.

Todd Drake

Visiting Assistant Professor Todd Drake creates community influenced paintings, installations, and murals. A 2004-2005 Rockefeller Fellow at UNC-Chapel Hill, his works have been exhibited in solo and group shows in galleries and museums throughout the Southeast. Drake earned an MFA in Painting from UNC-Greensboro in 1990 and currently teaches Modern Art History and Introduction to Visual Art.

David Newton

Assistant Professor David Newton earned his MFA from Bard College, Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts (1997), with additional studies at the Art Students League and the Rhode Island School of Design. Newton's work has been exhibited nationally and is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of the City of New York and the RISD Museum in Providence. His media for the works in this exhibition are predominantly steel, hardware, and found materials.

Roy Nydorf

Professor Roy Nydorf carves rhythmically sinuous figures and masks from diverse woods such as catalpa, cherry, mahogany, and boxwood. He earned his MFA with honors from Yale University and BA from the State University of New York, and also studied at the Art Students' League. He has been on the faculty since 1978 and is currently chair of the art department.

Charles Tefft

Charles Tefft's new forms and glazes are influenced and inspired by a recent 3-week trip to Japan funded by a grant from the Freeman Foundation. A continuing part-time lecturer and director of the college's Ceramics Program, he earned a BFA with honors from Guilford College in 1997. His work was the subject of a feature article in the national publication, Clay Times (Nov. 2005) and has been published in Wheel Thrown Ceramics and The Ceramic Design Book, both published by Lark Books.

Adele Wayman

Adele Wayman's recent paintings celebrate the life and death of daylilies and iris. The natural cycle of these flowers connects through titles to her meditation practice and ritual altars. The H. Curt and Patricia S. Hege Professor of Art, Wayman joined Guilford College in 1973 and currently chairs the arts division. Wayman earned her MFA from UNC-G and her BA from Vassar College.
