Mouse House in Columbia, SC, Offers Works by Margaret "Cookie" Richardson and Tuula Ihamaki-Widdifield

Close friends, Margaret "Cookie" Richardson and Tuula Ihamaki-Widdifield, will be exhibiting recent works in clay at Mouse House, in historic Elmwood Park, in Columbia, SC, from Apr. 8, 2006. The opening date is a special one. It is the 25th anniversary of the Elmwood Park Tour of Homes and Gardens.

Tuula Ihamaki-Widdifield

The two potters specialize in everyday, functional art but each strives to embellish her works with a personal touch. Ihamaki-Widdifield draws inspiration from her Scandinavian roots. She decorates her vessel forms with engobes and underglazes and uses scraffito technique to reveal the color of the clay. All of her designs and carvings are done freehand.

Richardson has been experimenting on her bowls and platters. She uses bright colors and stain glass pieces in her clay. Surface ornamentation is meant to reflect the beauty she finds in nature.

For both artists, working with clay is a spiritual exercise. Both take pleasure in making utilitarian objects and encourage others to use the art in their homes.

Functional art is exactly what Mouse House wanted to bring to Elmwood Park during the Home and Garden Tour. "Tuula and Cookie's work is a perfect compliment to our mirrors, antiquarian prints, and fiber arts," said Steve Dingman of Mouse House. "Visitors and art lovers alike will enjoy art for the home."
