WestEnd Darkroom in Greenville, SC, Hosts UVA Spring Art Show

Upstate Visual Arts, Inc. is proud to present its 2nd annual spring art show and sale, the Claude E. Smith, Jr. Juried Show, on display Apr. 21-23, 2006, at the WestEnd Darkroom at 640 South Main St. in Greenville, SC. The goal of this show, which features fine artwork in a wide variety of media, is to showcase the vast talent of visual artists living in upstate South Carolina.

The Claude Smith Show is named after a beloved watercolor teacher at the UVA School of Art, Claude E. Smith, who died in Apr. 2004. In view of Smith's dedication to UVA and its educational and artistic mission, his family agreed in 2005 to support UVA's spring show each year.

Alison Gray serves as Director of Administration for Upstate Visual Arts. "UVA believes in encouraging the production of art, especially art that represents the cultural diversity in an increasingly multi-cultural community like Greenville," said Gray. "We hope the presentation of this art will educate the viewing public, possibly creating new collectors, but certainly providing a necessary channel of communication between the artists and non-artists in the community."

The artwork in the Claude Smith Show will consist of a diverse mix of affordable, original work in a variety of visual arts media selected by a juror from pieces contributed by members of UVA. The awards this year total over $2,500.Those pieces not accepted into the juried show will be on display at the UVA Gallery at 701 Pendleton St. in Greenville during the hours listed below.

The juror for this year's show is Tom Dimond, who has taught art in South Carolina since 1968. He earned a BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art in 1966 and an MFA from the University of Tennessee in 1969. His paintings have been exhibited widely in the US as well as regionally. He is currently a professor at the Department of Art, Clemson University, in Clemson, SC.

For the second year in a row, the Claude Smith Show will coincide with Artisphere, Greenville's new international arts festival. We believe this show will reinforce Artisphere's commitment to attract new arts audiences and provide the public with accessible resources to the arts. With its stellar selection of local artwork, the Claude Smith Show promises to be one of Artisphere's finest features.

Hours for the shows are Apr. 22, 10am-8pm and Apr. 23, 11am-4pm.
