Asheville Area Arts Council in Asheville, NC, Features Works by Robert Winkler, Wayne Kirby and Dan Millspaugh

The Asheville Area Arts Council in Asheville, NC, will present the exhibit, Earth/Sky: A Sculptor's View of the Mountains, in the AAAC's Front Gallery from Apr. 6 - 30, 2007.

This exhibit consists of abstract works by three sculptors that range from the weightlessness of rice paper to the gravity of iron and concrete. A metaphor for the Blue Ridge Mountains, these works will address the spatial potential of the floor and ceiling of the gallery - the weight of mountains below contrast with the lightness of the drifting clouds and sky above. Sound sculpture will fuse the contrasting works into a multi-media experience.

Dr. Kirby has taught at the University of North Carolina at Asheville since 1983. He serves as Professor of Music and Chair of the Department of Music. For the past twenty years, he has explored the connection between, science, mathematics and music composition.

Dan Millspaugh joined UNC Asheville's Art Department in 1981. Millspaugh has completed sculpture commissions for the City of Asheville, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, the UNC Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill and the Tennessee Valley Authority in Alabama.

Robert Winkler is a sculptor and the guest curator of this conceptual exhibit. It is his vision incorporating rice paper and aluminum "sky" sculptures he has displayed on each coast: in Los Angeles and Washington, DC.
