April Issue 2008

Galleries in Brevard, NC, Start Gallery Walks for 2008 on Apr. 25

The galleries and art spots of Brevard, NC, will kick-off the third season of 4th Friday Gallery Walks on Apr. 25, 2008, from 5-9pm in downtown Brevard. Enjoy an evening stroll as you explore the art galleries, art stores, retail stores and restaurants that are staying open late. Most galleries have new artwork each month, while you enjoy wine, munchies and music. Be sure to look for the 14 animal sculptures as you walk around downtown.

Tammy Hopkins is Executive Director of the Transylvania Community Arts Council and is looking forward to the new season. "Brevard is growing as an art destination because of great artists and arts venues. There are currently 9 downtown art galleries and at least 10 studios and galleries up on Scenic 276 South. Not bad for a small town!"  Brevard was recently named Best Arts & Culture Destination - for populations under 30,000 by Mountain Homes Southern Style Magazine. Last year Blue Ridge Country Magazine named Brevard as a new Vibrant Art Hub in WNC. This year in January the NC Main Street program awarded Brevard Best Outdoor Space Improvement for its 14 downtown animal sculptures.

During the April Gallery Walk the Transylvania Community Arts Council Gallery will host their Annual Transylvania County Student Art Show featuring works by art students in the Transylvania County School system and Brevard Academy, from kindergarten through senior high. Number 7 Fine Arts & Crafts Cooperative a program of the TC Arts Council is run by 25 local artists who will celebrate spring with new works by its members with the theme "The Seven Signs of Spring."

Bluewood Gallery will feature the impressionist painter, Virginia Pendergrass, in an exhibit that runs through May 2. The exhibit presents a range of impressionist paintings, from landscapes to still lifes. Pendergrass is known for her loose brushstrokes and she works to capture the vibrant, natural colors of Western North Carolina. Pendergrass has won numerous awards for her paintings and was accepted as a signature member in the American Impressionist Society, where her work has been exhibited over the past few years. Over at the Drew Deane Gallery new works by Deane herself will be on display.

The Brevard 4th Friday Gallery Walks will continue on the fourth Friday of each month through Dec. 2008. (Dates for 2008: Apr. 25, May 23, June 27, July 25, Aug. 22, Sept. 26, Oct. 24, Nov. 28, and Dec. 26) Gallery walk visitors are encouraged to make an evening of it and visit the local restaurants before, during and after the tour of galleries.

Galleries participating include: Number 7 Arts and Crafts Cooperative, Red Wolf Gallery, Bluewood Gallery, Drew Deane Gallery, Hollingsworth Gallery, Gallery on Main, TC Arts Council Gallery and The Gallery of Contemporary Arts.
