Lowcountry Artists LTD. in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Rana Jordahl

Lowcountry Artists LTD. in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, Loosening Up, an unveiling of new paintings by artist Rana Jordahl. The exhibition is on display from Apr. 4 - 30, 2008.

The exhibit is a collection of textural paintings done solely in palette knife. Jordahl is experimenting with the play of light and color in conjunction with her palette knife technique resulting in rich Lowcountry landscapes with a loose impressionistic and contemporary edge.

Jordahl states that the inspiration for her one-woman show is the wonderful, uninhibited feeling she experiences when incorporating her knife and a generous application of paint to create bold, intuitive strokes. "I love the movement and texture of the paint and the way it lends a fresh, modern twist to the conventional subject matter of cerulean skies and green-gold marsh grasses. My work with brushes had begun to feel laborious and I was looking for new ideas. The palette knife encouraged a looseness in form and color mixing and a freedom that is exciting and different. It's hard to believe all of this can come from the edge and flat of one knife."

Primarily self taught with a past career as an advertising executive in Atlanta, GA, this Iowa native delights in exploring her new Charleston home with its historically significant architecture, scenic ocean vistas and rich colors of the marshes. Peering out her Daniel Island window has netted viewers a wonderful show including lush florals and engaging nocturnes not often seen in palette knife.
