April Issue 2009

Dog & Horse Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Noel Hoffmann

Dog & Horse Fine Art and Portraiture in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, Noel Hoffmann: Dog & Wildflowers, on view from Apr. 3 - 25, 2009.

If artists derive inspiration from the familiar, then Noel Hoffmann's heart swells from her work as a canine artist. For her, art imitates life. A resident of Stratton, VT, and a devoted dog owner and trainer, Hoffmann's life and art are about dogs and the woods and the fields that stir their true nature.

Specializing in fine paintings, prints and portraits of both sporting dogs and show dogs, Hoffmann's contemporary style brings an exciting edge to this genre. She has personalized her style with a technique she calls "acrylic glaze." By gradually building layers of color, she pours depth and rich texture into each piece, creating a world as naturally inviting as the crisp morning air of a fall hunt.

The exhibition will include a series of paintings of sporting dogs and the grasses and flowers in the fields where they hunt, showcasing Hoffmann's beloved muses: dogs and the lush sporting fields that awaken their instincts.

Hoffmann's unique style is indicative of an artist with a passion that is focused, but highly contagious. Although she admits to trying to keep her work "direct and unsentimental," her knowledge of sporting breeds is engaging and clearly evident in the way she captures dogs in their natural element. In the work, October, The German Shorthaired Pointer, the elegant power of the German Shorthaired Pointers standing in the field is evident as they stand at attention with the tension of a greyhound ready to run, is just one example of Hoffmann's ability to portray a dog acting according to nature's sublime design. Having followed and trained with several outstanding sporting teams, her work is the product of classical artist training and great understanding of sporting breeds.

While Hoffmann's approach to painting may be kept simple, her work evokes a connection that is not easily accomplished. It is not only her contemporary style, but also her unrelenting passion for her work that sets her apart. Her work is reflective of a most expressive and magnetic artist who, moved by her love of dogs, the countryside and a great respect for the sporting tradition, hopes to move others.
