City Art Gallery in Columbia, SC, Features Works by Barry Brian Wheeler

City Art Gallery in Columbia, SC, will present the exhibit, PIX-ELements:, featuring works by Barry Brian Wheeler, a University of South Carolina MA Thesis candidate, on view starting Apr. 22, for Artista Vista (5-9pm) and continuing through May 1, 2010.

Wheeler is a digital artist from Columbia, SC. A native South Carolinian, he is a graduate of the University of South Carolina. After working as a research scientist at the USC School of Medicine, Wheeler went on to pursue a career in information technology and multimedia. He is currently employed as Operations Manager of Litigation Technology at Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, P.A. and will earn his Master of Arts degree in Media Arts from the University of South Carolina this May.

Wheeler's thesis project, PIX-ELements:, is a collection of photographic-quality prints, digitally captured, transformed, and synthesized in high dynamic range. A technical-conceptual exhibit, PIX-ELements: explores the logic of unitizing "picture elements": pixels, images, objects within images, assemblages of images, and the processes that define them. Through techniques of resolving, sampling, manipulating, and arranging elemental image units, Wheeler considers the relationships between parts and wholes. From pixel to image to exhibit, the "picture element" provides an opportunity for examining the richness and dynamism of artificial composites. Here line, shape, and depth, color and light, are combined by means of computer technologies in order to reconfigure - and revitalize - our experience of natural textures and processes.
