Burroughs-Chapin Art Museum in Myrtle Beach, SC, Features Works by High School Students

The Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum in Myrtle Beach, SC, is presenting 12th Annual Horry/Georgetown High Schools Juried Fine Art Exhibition, on view through Apr. 21, 2013.

Local high-school students have been given the opportunity to win cash prizes, sale their works and show them in a museum setting.

Cash prizes have been provided by Carolina Radiology Associates, which is sponsoring the event. Prizes will be given for Best in Show in either 2D or 3D ($500); First ($100), Second ($75) and Third place ($50) in both 2D and 3D works; plus six Honorable Mentions ($25) in three 2D and three 3D.

Schools participating are Aynor High School, Carolina Forest High School, Conway High School, Georgetown High School, Green Sea Floyd High School, Loris High School, Lowcountry Preparatory School, Myrtle Beach High School, Myrtle Beach Academy for the Arts, Sciences & Technology, North Myrtle Beach High School, St. James High School, Socastee High School and Waccamaw High School.

More than 324 pieces were submitted for consideration in this year’s competition and 92 pieces were chosen to be displayed at the Museum. This year’s judge is international experimental watercolorist Mary Ann Beckwith. A recently retired professor of art at Michigan Tech University, Beckwith was instrumental in bringing the arts to engineering and science students. She has twice been the recipient of the University’s Distinguished Teaching Award and is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Watercolor Honor Society of Watercolor USA as well as many more.
