Society of Bluffton Artists in Bluffton, SC, Offers Exhibit that Takes a Double Take on Subjects

The Society of Bluffton Artists in Bluffton, SC, will present Side by Side, where photographers and non-photographers present different interpretations of a single subject - side by side, on view from Apr. 1 through May 4, 2013. A reception will be held on Apr. 7, from 3-5pm.

This is an open show with entries from SOBA members and other artists and photographers from the area. This exhibition is SOBA’s first ever show of its kind. Photographers teamed up with other artists – with each artist having chosen a photograph from those submitted for review. Those artist then interpreted that photograph in his or her preferred medium – be it oil, watercolor, acrylic, mixed media or possibly even 3-dimensions. The photo and the accompanying work will be displayed side by side of course!

This is a competition and each of the pieces will be judged on its own merit. There will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes for both photographs and paintings, and one overall best of show.

The judges for this competition are Andrea Pejeau and Dennis Vernon. Pejeau is a pastel portrait painter. She received her BPA with honors from Ohio University. Studying art in Italy, she developed a love for the figure that defines her work and inspires her teaching. She has been a featured artist for galleries in the Southeast and a frequent participant in group and juried shows. Pejeau’s pastels reflect her appreciation of the human form and her passion for line in capturing the gesture of the figure. She has taught art from Maine to the Virgin Islands, working in a wide range of media. Pejeau has been a Master Teacher of Visual Arts at Sea Island School for the Arts. She lives on Hilton Head Island, SC.

Dennis Vernon is an art instructor at Bluffton High School, a graduate of Northern Illinois University, BFA Illustration and University of Oklahoma, MFA Design and a National Board Certified Instructor. He started his teaching career on the post secondary level and worked professionally as a designer and illustrator in Chicago. He has taught many different forms of the visual arts and specializes in illustration and photographic process. His concentration at Bluffton High has been all levels of photographic expression as an art form. Vernon challenges his students to achieve their best. To be able to successfully use the traditional analog forms of photographic process and advance to the digital world of present day photographic media and manipulation. Vernon shows his work extensively throughout the Southeast and has many works in public and private collections.
