North Carolina Quilt Symposium Features 300 Quilts in Charlotte, NC, Show

Over 300 quilts will be on display in Charlotte, NC, in the Halton Arena at UNC Charlotte as part of the annual North Carolina Quilt Symposium. The 2000 North Carolina Quilt Symposium, an annual event hosted each year by a different quilt guild in North Carolina, will be held May 25-28.

This year, 400 full time participants will take part in classes and lectures on all aspects of American quilting. The show will include everything from traditional bed quilts and contemporary art pieces to miniatures and wearables. There will also be 25 vendors of quilt and needlework supplies, dollmaking supplies, quilting hoops, hanging racks, and other related wares. The Symposium participants, nationally and internationally known quilters, will also exhibit their recent work. Free demonstrations on a variety of quilt-related topics will be offered throughout the show. A lecture by Merikay Waldvogela, a nationally known quilt historian from Knoxville, TN, will be offered to the public on Friday evening May 26. The lecture will highlight historical quilts from this area.

Symposium participants from all over the southeast and members of the Charlotte Quilters Guild will be combining two shows into one spectacular event. The "Dogwood Challenge", open to all participants and guild members, will be a special part of this year's show, with each entry featuring dogwood in its design.

Quilting in the United States is a multi-billion dollar a year enterprise, and recent innovations have made quilting more popular than ever. These are not the quilts of old, made from scraps of old clothing. Fabric, thread, books, patterns and classes are purchased new for each project. Many of the biggest textile and thread manufacturers in the US are here in the southeast, and the resurgence of quilting is of particular importance here.

The Charlotte Quilters' Guild has been working for two years to blanket the Piedmont with quilts in honor of this event. The guild has provided financial support for research being done on 1830's Center Chintz Medallion Quilts from this area. A companion exhibit will be at the new Charlotte Museum of History from May 8 through early August, including selections from the Museum's collection. They have also provided substantial support for 1999 Quilt National-Section A, the most outstanding juried quilt exhibit in the country, to be housed at the Museum of York County in Rock Hill, SC, from May 12 through the end of July. A companion exhibit at the Museum of York County is Quilt Regional: Breaking Traditions, which is an invitational exhibit of art quilts made by quilters in North and South Carolina.
