Crossroads Fine Art & Framing in Bluffton, SC, Presents Its First Exhibition

Bluffton, SC's oldest art gallery, Crossroads Fine Art & Framing, will host an exhibition titled Stories from My America, Part II, featuring the work of noted Atlanta, GA, artist Charlotte Riley Webb. The exhibit will be on display from May 26 through June 16.

An African American, Webb paints in acrylics, using bold colors and equally energetic brushwork. Her paintings draw on the experience of growing up in a tight-knit family, in which the day-to-day rituals of life are an anchor in an otherwise changing, confusing world.

Webb combines cooking, quilting, music-making and other daily activities in a sometimes frenetic symphony of color and rhythm. At the center of the activity there is always an island of calm and well-being.

One of her best-known works is Giving the Yeast Rolls Time to Rise. It is about the patience required in the nurturing of children. It depicts an older woman with two children, seated at a table, preparing biscuit dough.

"Today," the artist says, "people are raising their kids on canned biscuits. They don't spend enough time with their children; they don't give the yeast rolls time to rise."

Stories is the first exhibit to be held at Crossroads, and marks the third year in its current location. The artist and gallery are donating a significant portion of any proceeds from the exhibit to the Bluffton chapter of Habitat for Humanity.

Located at 107 Towne Center in Bluffton, Crossroads is open Mon.-Thur., 9:30am-5:30pm, and Fri. & Sat., 9:30am-9:00pm. The gallery launched a web site in April of this year, and a large sampling of two- and three-dimensional work can be viewed at (http://www.crossroadsfineart.com).
