Smith-Killian Fine Art in Charleston, SC, Shows New Works by Shannon Smith
Shannon Smith's newest collection of work entitled, Subtleties of Light, opens at Smith-Killian Fine Art in Charleston, SC, on May 18, 2001. The exhibition will continue through May 31. For portions of the week following the opening, come meet the artist as she spends time painting in the gallery. After several showings at the Wells Gallery, this is the artist's first exhibit at Smith-Killian Fine Art.
Offering works both dramatic and subdued, Smith captures moments of quiet beauty from places local and foreign with strong contrasts and her own sensitivity to light. In this collection, Smith draws further from a trip to France, in which she makes the cafes of Provence and coastal villages of Brittany come alive with color. As a Charleston native, Smith also never tires of the lure of the Lowcountry, capturing familiar scenes in new perspectives. She also further explores her fascination with the still life genre, this time capturing studies of broader interior scenes.
As an artist who spends most every day painting, the development of her work over a period of mere months is obvious to long-admirers of her work. However, some of Smith's new perspectives can be attributed to the past year of many changes for the Smith family. After several years of showing in the Wells Gallery, all of the Smiths have moved their work to a new space, Smith-Killian Fine Art, opened under the direction of Wells owner Hume Killian. Shannon Smith also has moved from painting in her public studio on King Street to a newly constructed glass sunroom in her home that is filled with natural sunlight.
Smith-Killian Fine Art is a member of the Charleston Fine Art Dealers Association which will be hosting the 3rd Charleston Fine Arts Annual on the weekend of Nov. 2-4, 2001.
