Historic Charleston Reproductions Shop in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Marie Colton Pelzer

The Garden of Eden has long existed in Judeo/Christian belief as the one place where humans and the Divine were truly connected. Eden is also the place where humans parted with the Divine and the natural world. A world which was created for human enjoyment by the Divine. Eden therefore represents for us the apex of the human/Divine connection. When humans were expelled from the Garden, they began a yearning to find a place to reexperience that sublime union.

Photographer Marie Colton Pelzer explores the meaning and nuances of this search in her exhibition South of Eden at the Historic Charleston Reproductions Shop, 105 Broad Street, downtown Charleston at the corner of King and Broad. The exhibition will be on view from May 3 - 7, 2002. Hours of viewing are Mon. and Tue. from 9am-5pm and on Sun., May 4, 1-5pm.

Pelzer utilizes her lens, with the subtleties of natural light, to create classically elegant images, some of which are then printed as one-of -a-kind emulsion transfers or Polaroid transfers. Others are uniquely over-painted with oil or tints. A native of Asheville, North Carolina, Pelzer has lived in Charleston for approximately 30 years.
