Museum of York County in Rock Hill, SC, Offers Exhibition With Scotch-Irish Theme

Beginning May 4 visitors to the Museum of York County (MYCO), in Rock Hill, SC, will see the newest exhibition Gatherin' Together: Scotch Irish Lifeways in the Carolina Piedmont. The exhibit will continue through Feb. 2, 2003.

This exhibit, underwritten in part by the South Carolina Humanities Council and the Institute for Southern Studies at the University of South Carolina, explores customs, traditions and lifeways of the Scotch-Irish through their language, music, folklore, religion, politics, industry, architecture, cuisine and decorative arts.

During the 1700s, thousands of people made the perilous voyage from Northern Ireland to the American colonies in search of new found freedom and opportunities. They carried with them a heritage steeped in traditions nurtured over the centuries in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Many settled in the fertile foothills of the Carolina Piedmont and created a way of life that mirrored their homeland. Their craftsmanship, family ties, faith and loyalty are traits that have become definitive of the Scotch-Irish heritage of the South.

Their story is one of hardship, courage and perseverance. From building a life in the wilderness, to abiding by their Presbyterian beliefs, to joining the cause of the American Revolution, the Scotch-Irish were instrumental in changing the course of American history and the face of the South.

Research information for this exhibit came from the York County Culture and Heritage Commission (CHC) archives, as well as, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Northern Ireland. In addition to the display of exhibition items from the CHC archives, additional purchases and loans from other sources, such as Northern Ireland, were sought out.
