Circular Congregational Church in Charleston, SC, Features Exhibition with Water Theme

Debra Stokes

Falling from the sky. Running through your veins. The source of all life on earth. Violent enough to move mountains. Gentle enough to reflect starlight in an evening sky. From raging rivers to massive oceans to the puddle of rain collected on a moonlit street, it is... Water.

Water & Stones & Stars: How Water Connects Us to the Divine is the theme of the 2003 Piccolo Spoleto Festival In the Spirit art exhibit, held annually at Circular Congregational Church in Charleston, SC, from May 23 through June 8, 2003. The gallery showcase features fine art in a variety of mediums, from sculpture to painting to photography. Participating artists include: Robin Boston, Harry Folsom, Isabel Forbes, Peggy Howe, Brad Jayne, Honor Marks, Freida McDuffie, Gayle Newcomb, Lauren Petrovich, Missie Stevenson, Debra Stokes, and Chaz Walter.

Circular Congregational Church was founded in 1681, when Charleston's earliest settlers began meeting to worship in the manner of the Reformed Faith. The "White Meeting House," as the church building was called, gave Meeting Street its name. Water & Stones & Stars takes place in Circular's historic Fellowship Hall, surrounded by one of Charleston's oldest cemeteries. Called one of Charleston's great new gallery spaces, the building's fourteen foot high ceilings, large windows, and history as a sacred space make it a moving place to experience art.
