Spencer Art Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Kenneth Hanger and Sean Ahern

The Spencer Art Gallery in Charleston, SC, is presenting a two special exhibits including new works by guest artists Kenneth Hanger and Sean Ahern. Hanger's exhibit will be on view through July 31, 2003, and Ahern's will be on view from May 23 through June 9, 2003.

"Kenneth Hanger is truly a renaissance man. In addition to being a painter in love with light, structure and color who maintains a rigid schedule of art lessons, Ken is also a prominent cardiologist in the Charleston area with an enormous practice. He finds the time to pioneer and introduce new methods of treatment for his patients. Ken also finds time to compete in triathelon competitions, training each week with two 30 mile bike rides, two swims, and two runs. Ken's schedule gives new meaning to the term 'busy'." says Jerry Spencer, gallery owner.

Painting in high school and taking refresher courses later, Hanger has been taking regular painting lessons locally with a prominent artist for the past eight years. His art mentor, Rhett Thurman, says, "Ken is one of those remarkable people who can engage both the left and right brain paths. He has taken to the oil medium like a duck to water. Ken sees the world as an artist."

Sean Ahern graduated from Wando High School in Mt. Pleasant, SC, and moved to Georgia where he earned a degree in Sculpture from the Atlanta College of Art. After working as an apprentice with local artists in Atlanta, Ahern moved to France where he studied at L'École des Beaux-Arts in Saint Etienne and supported himself with his metal artwork. Moving back to Georgia, Ahern worked with prominent sculptor Andrew Crawford doing decorative works and corporate sculptures. His pride and joy is a 17 foot tall violin sculpture Ahern and Crawford created that stands at the new Performing Arts Center at Brenau University in Gainsville, GA.

"In addition to his innovative fine art sculpture, Ahern is being called 'the next Phillip Simmons' in recognition of his decorative iron works. He is a self-supporting artist with his own sculpture studio called 'Ahern's Anvil,'" says Spencer.

The gallery and examples of the artwork can be previewed on-line at (www.spencerartgallery.com) shortly after the respective exhibits open.
