Nature Art Gallery in Raleigh, NC, Features Works by David Stickel and Edward C. Smith
The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences' Nature Art Gallery in Raleigh, NC, is presenting the exhibition, Bold Looks at the Natural World, on view through May 31, 2004. The gallery will feature the works of painters David Stickel and Edward C. Smith.
"As an artist, I encourage others to 'reflect' on the wonders of the everyday world around us and really 'see' things that our fast pace and busy lives often cause us to overlook," said David Stickel. Stickel is a water-colorist, using photorealism to engage the viewer. His subject matter and realistic use of light, color and reflections encourage the viewer to discover new meanings in the everyday world around us. "I want to create art that excites people- that makes them spy a treasure across the room and impatiently hurry over to give it closer inspection."
A member of the National Watercolor Society,
Stickel's works have been published in The Best of Watercolor
and Splash 8 (available in Oct. 2004). North Carolina Public
Television aired several of his works in the series North Carolina
is My Canvas. Stickel is a resident of Chapel Hill, NC.
Edward Smith's paintings show juxtaposition - the clash between
nature and modern technology. "My work is about the inherent
conflict at the boundaries of the wild and developed worlds,"
said Smith. He uses traditional perspective and abstract pattern
- lush decoration and well-observed naturalistic detail mixed
with postmodern liberality. Inspired by the works of John James
Audubon, Smith focuses on the wildlife of his adopted Louisiana.
"I have been awestruck by the amazing volume and array of
birds here in combination with the explosion of industry and its
resulting pollution up and down the Mississippi River," continued
Smith.
Smith is an Assistant Professor of Painting at Louisiana State
University. He was the featured artist in the Spring/Summer 2001
edition of The New Delta Review and his works have been
selected for publication in Harper's magazine. His paintings
have been displayed at Dartmouth College, New Hampshire; Queens
College, New York; and The Contemporary Art Center, New Orleans.
The Nature Art Gallery, inside the Museum Store, hosts new exhibitions
by Southern artists every six weeks. All exhibited art is for
sale.
