Somerhill Gallery in Chapel Hill, NC, Features Works by John Beerman

The Somerhill Gallery in Chapel Hill, NC, will present the exhibition, Recent Works, featuring works by John Beerman, from May 2 - June 11, 2004. The exhibit is the fourth solo exhibition for this NC native.

The American landscape is the focus of Beerman's paintings and monoprints. Using a rich, warm selection of colors, artist Beerman captures the feelings, atmosphere, and ties that link the earth to the sky above it from the rolling terrain of the Hudson River Valley to the lush countryside of the North Carolina piedmont. He strives to capture in each work the spirit of the land and its influence upon those who inhabit it.

Included in this group of works is a new selection of monotype prints. This series was completed just recently, in collaboration with Sylvia Roth of Hudson River Editions, especially for inclusion in this exhibit.

A North Carolina native, Beerman is a resident of New York state. He has been honored with many one-person exhibits including ones at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, NC, and the Greenhill Center for North Carolina Art in Greensboro, NC.

In Southern Accents, John Coffey, Curator of Modern and American Art at North Carolina Museum of Art remarks, "John is clearly observing nature and translating it into a sort of hyperreality. Rather than simple reportage, John's landscapes communicate his respose to the sensations he feels when he paints a scene."

Group exhibits across the US have included works by Beerman. Among them are ones at the American Academy of Arts and Letters, New York, NY; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY.

Numerous collections across the country include works by Beerman. Among them are, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh, NC; the St. John's Museum of Art, Wilmington, NC; the Weatherspoon Museum of Art, Greensboro, NC; the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, TX; the Chemical Bank, Chase Manhattan Bank, General Mills in Minneapolis, MN; and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN. In addition, the North Carolina Governor's Mansion displays a North Carolina landscape painted by Beerman in its South Parlor.
