Hayes George Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Andrew Lui

The Hayes George Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is presenting the exhibit, Pilgrims Progress, featuring paintings by Andrew Lui. The exhibit will be on view through May 28, 2005. Lui's bold brushstrokes depict mythical subject matter including messengers on horseback carrying word of triumphs or pending challenges. Hayes George Gallery is horned to bring this work to Charlotte and the South East for the first time.

Lui was born into a comfortable upper-class family in Canton, China after he and his family were labeled "anti communist" for supporting the failed Red Guard movement they lost every thing. At age 19 he was forced to escape communist China by swimming to the island of Hong Kong. The traumatic journey began 5 hours earlier when he witnessed the death of his mother.

Lui's early work depicted powerful images of struggle, but now the work has made a journey of its own reflecting in part the life of its creator.

A successful businessman and a professional artist since the 1970's Lui draws from his past using an ancient technique and traditional Chinese materials to create his work. Lui currently lives in Montreal Canada where he continues to paint. His work graces the walls of such intuitions as the Museum Dijon in Dijon, France and The Museum of Contemporary Art, Montreal, Canada.
