May Issue 2005

Silver Fox Gallery in Hendersonville, NC, Features Works by Ann DerGara and Nancy Fleming

An exhibition titled, Inspired by Nature, opens on May 6 at the Silver Fox Gallery in Hendersonville, NC. The exhibit, which runs through June 2, 2005, features landscape paintings of Ann DerGara and jewelry of Nancy Fleming that interpret the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Nancy Fleming

Asheville, NC-area resident Nancy Fleming uses metal as a language to tell a story. In this new body of work she calls her "Nature Series," Fleming honors the environment of Western North Carolina by replicating the textures and forms that nature has bestowed. Fleming incorporates objects found in nature, such as stones, gems, bones and castings of twigs and pods.

In her narrative pieces also displayed in this exhibit, Fleming explores themes of romance, strength and self-empowerment, from a contemporary point of view. Her approach to wearable sculpture is inspired by the history of adornment as symbolic and significant. Pieces selected for the exhibit reflect upon the harmony that can be achieved between people and nature.

Fleming studied metalsmithing at Penland School of Crafts, Arrowmont School of Crafts, and the John C. Campbell Folk School. She is a member of the Society of North American Goldsmiths, the American Craft Council, Carolina Designer Craftsmen and the Southern Highland Craft Guild, and the winner of numerous awards.

Ann DerGara

Internationally recognized painter Ann DerGara, who resides in Brevard, NC, fills the Silver Fox Gallery's exhibit space this month with colorful paintings of the Blue Ridge Mountains in acrylic on canvas. She paints the region's mountains and valleys from her deep feelings and memories, rather than from a visual record of a specific place, with a result that is inspirational.

Dick Williams of the Odyssey Studio in Atlanta, GA, says of DerGara's work, "Visually, Ann's work conveys a subtle, emotional sensuousness that invites the viewer to experience a personal relationship with the piece. An inherent grasp of color theory enhances the whole and creates a visual impact that lingers."

DerGara approaches her art enthusiastically and passionately. "She celebrates the positive and beautiful aspects of life," said gallery owner Bonnie Rash. "Her brilliant use of color expresses her respect for the harmony of nature a recurring theme that has brought her international acclaim."

Although DerGara is highly proficient in all forms of two-dimensional art, having taught these forms in venues that include the popular annual workshop at Kanuga Conference Center, painting remains her first love.
