West End Art Gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, Features Works by Henryk Fantazos

West End Art Gallery in Winston-Salem, NC will present a one-man exhibition of paintings and engravings by Henryk Fantazos entitled, If Poems Were Paintings They Would Look Like These. The exhibition will open on May 20th and continue through June 18, 2005. It will be the only opportunity for the public to view this large of an exhibition featuring the artist's original work. West End Art Gallery will host an opening reception on Friday May 20th from 6-9pm with special guest NC State Representative Bill Faison who will be introducing the exhibit and the artist.

Henryk Fantazos was born in Kamionka Strumilowa near Lvov in what was then Poland in 1944. From 1957 to 1963, he attended the Lyceum of Fine Arts in Katowice, Poland, and in 1963 was admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, where he studied at the Painting Faculty under the eminent Professor J. Nowosielski. In 1969 he received his Master's Degree and became a professional artist. In 1975 he immigrated to the United States, was granted political asylumand moved to New York. The following year he went to live and paint on a remote farm in West Virginia."Those eight years were a time of Dionysian rejoicing. I painted, I tended a garden, and I looked very intimately at nature."For some years now Fantazos has lived in Hillsborough, North Carolina, dividing time and attention between painting and copper engraving.  Since 1969, Fantazos has worked as a painter and, more recently, as an engraver, organizing one-man shows and taking part in many group showings in Poland and international exhibitions throughout Europe and the United States.

If Poems Were Paintings They Would Look Like These, will feature over 70 paintings and etchings, including images of Fantazos' newest series "Face of the South". This is the artist's largest exhibition of his career. Please join us for this incomparable exhibition of extraordinary craftsmanship that will take you on a flight of the imagination.
