Hayes George Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by David deVillier

Hayes George Gallery in Charlotte, NC, presents its second solo exhibition for Louisiana native and national recognized artist David deVillier entitled, Tilted Days and Lovely Leanings. Opening May 5, the show will be on view through June 3, 2006. Like the show title suggests, the images in deVillier's paintings seem to defy gravity, time and order. His work is like the first line in a spectacular fantasy story - rich in images that play in a land of musical trees, curious spaces and mysterious dwellings.

Historically, narrative paintings have been used to tell stories of political, social or religious significance. Audiences were amused and entertained by the familiar stories they saw played out in paintings before them. The stories told in deVillier's paintings border on narrative allegory. His use of symbols will spark the childlike imagination in all of us. deVillier is not telling a spastic story in these paintings, his narratives are more an observation, an enigmatic poetry of universal imagery that every viewer can relate to. The symbolism in the painting is used to guide the viewer in a general direction but is not a key to unlocking the riddle. It is important to deVillier that each viewer accesses their own history and experience while viewing his paintings.
