Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, Features Works by Anne Cunningham

The artwork of Wilmington, NC, artist Anne Cunningham is being featured in a show entitled Metal Explorations at Sunset River Marketplace art gallery in Calabash, NC, on view through May 31, 2006.

Cunningham, who also studied journalism and worked as an interior designer for 15 years, first encountered copper, bronze and brass objects in the early 90s when she worked at a small garden shop in Raleigh, NC. She began applying chemicals to metal pieces in order to give them an aged, verdigris appearance. Cunningham took scraps of the metals home and starting incorporating them into her paintings, more and more until her pieces became almost all metal, with only a small amount of paint.

Over the years Cunningham has continued to experiment using lightweight metals such as copper, brass, aluminum and nickel. She shapes and texturizes them, often applying papers, inks, dyes and chemicals. Some are free-form shapes; others are structured and layered.

Cunningham's work has been shown in prestigious shows and exhibitions all over the country including the International Society of Experimental Artists' 12th Annual Exhibition in Chicago, IL; Sedona Art Center in Sedona, AZ; Agora Gallery, Soho, New York City, NY; the juried July National Show held at Franklin Square Gallery in Southport, NC; and many more.

Cunningham's pieces have been published in The Art of Layering: Making Connections, (2004 Society Of Layerists in Multi-Media, Albuquerque, NM); Bridging Time & Space - Essays on Layered Art (Markowitz Publishing); Southern Living magazine online, Arts Alive magazine and on the front cover of Currents (Star-News entertainment section).

Not surprisingly, many corporate collectors from North Carolina to Ohio have chosen to include metalworks by Anne Cunningham, among them Wake Medical Center, RBC Centura Bank, Bank of Birmingham and Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

According to gallery owner Ginny Lassiter, Cunningham's artwork is much sought after. She said, "Anne's pieces go quickly. People love the architectural aspect of them. And they're so beautifully designed. She's one of the best."

Sunset River Marketplace, located on NC-179, is one of the area's largest galleries.
