Charleston Crafts in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Tricia Boyd-Crum

Beaufort County artist, Tricia Boyd-Crum will showcase her work in fused glass, reduction block prints and etchings at Charleston Crafts in Charleston, SC, on view through May 31, 2007.

Boyd-Crum produces functional pieces in fused glass, as well as incorporating fused glass elements in her decorative window pieces. Her prints are finely detailed and sometimes hand-colored depictions of architecture and natural objects.

Boyd-Crum, originally from Pennsylvania, has studied printmaking at Kutztown State University and Allegheny College. More recently, she has studied stained glass techniques with Bruce Henning and spent many years working with Michael J. Hiester of Blue Heron Glass in Charleston, to learn the intricacies of warm glass. She is now the mentor for studio time and teaches the intermediate copper foil class there.

"I want to bring a smile, a second look when someone sees my work," she says. "I always work with a model or photograph to keep the details as accurate as I can."  Boyd-Crum's favorite subjects show up in both her decorative glass and prints. Small bits of nature, especially those that fascinate children, are common in her work. She is also fascinated by architecture and her etchings are often inspired by buildings, or fragments of buildings. "I like ruins," she says. "I want to know what they were used for and why they are still there."  Boyd-Crum finds many interesting subjects of this kind in both Beaufort and Charleston Counties. Her functional pieces sometimes use the same decorative motifs as her other work, but more often are inspired by the use of pure color in geometric presentations.

In addition to the work she exhibits at Charleston Crafts, Boyd-Crum paints in watercolor, and designs jewelry that incorporates torch-worked and kiln-worked glass elements.  A former professional picture framer, she mattes and frames her own work to museum standards.

A mother of two grown sons, she resides in beautiful rural northern Beaufort County, enjoying the tides and her cats.

Her work can be viewed at Charleston Crafts, Blue Heron Glass, or at the Piccolo Spoleto Crafts Fairs in Wragg Square in Charleston, Memorial Day weekend and the first weekend in June.

Charleston Crafts Gallery is a co-op gallery exhibiting the members work in a variety of media.
