EastSquare ArtWorks in Salisbury, NC, Opens with Sculpture Exhibition

EastSquare ArtWorks, a contemporary fine art collaborative and design hub newly located in Salisbury, NC, is hosting its first exhibition, Six Sculptors, featuring six renowned sculptors from Northwest North Carolina. The exhibit, on view from May 1 through June 30, 2008, will include works by Michael Baker, founding member of EastSquare ArtWorks (Salisbury), Jim Gallucci (Greensboro, NC), Jerry Adams (Mooresville, NC), Harry McDaniel (Asheville, NC), Dan Millspaugh (Asheville, NC), and Harry Seng (Morganton, NC).

Michael Baker

Michael Baker is a full time sculptor who works in his Salisbury studio in EastSquare ArtWorks designing and building contemporary stainless steel sculpture for both residential and commercial clients. His most recent commercial sculpture installations are at Methodist University, Fayetteville, NC, and "Cirque," a residential hi-rise in Dallas, TX. Baker is one of the founding members of East Square Art Works.

Jim Gallucci creates gates and benches from brass and painted steel. Gates have been found throughout the history of western Civilization as not only utilitarian architectural elements but as symbols in art and literature. Gallucci's gates may or may not function, but their symbolism holds greater meaning. We pass through many gates in our lives and his sculpture reflects those experiences.

Jerry Adams' primary media is polyester resin and fiberglass. Impressions are often half figures, near life size with earth tones utilized as colorant. The images are calm expressions of human mood, situation and/or status. The work is cast, in editions as well as one of a kind. Adams has exhibited widely throughout the eastern United States and is the recipient of numerous awards, most recently Best of Show at Bel Chere in Asheville.

Harry McDaniel's work ranges from abstract, decorative sculptures and mobiles to symbolic pieces dealing with psychological and anthropological themes. He works with wood, metals, cement, plastics, and found objects. Some of the threads that tie his work together are humor, a fascination with curves, motion (or implied motion), and an interest in the human condition. McDaniel's award winning work has exhibited throughout the country since 1986.

Dan Millspaugh has completed sculpture commissions for the city of Asheville, the Wright-Patterson Air Force base in Dayton, OH, and the Tennessee Valley Authority in AL. His works are on display in many corporate, public and private collections in the Eastern United States. He taught sculpture courses, as well as serving as Director of the Arts and Idea Program, and the Interdisciplinary Arts Course at the University of North Carolina-Asheville from 1981 - 2007.

Harry Seng has been a prolific sculptor since 2003 working with precious woods and metals. Prior to that time he painted in acrylics, watercolor and mixed media from 1978 until 2004 having done a few 3-D works during the decades until 2003.

Art lovers, collectors, artists and community leaders looking to infuse North Carolina with exciting, contemporary visual art are excited about EastSquare ArtWorks: the state's newest artist collaborative and arts incubator. For the first time, beginning May 1, ESA is open daily to the public 10am-6pm. Throughout the Month of May EastSquare ArtWorks will offer How To Workshops for both working artists and art lovers featuring subjects from successfully exhibiting at art shows to proper framing, beading and more. It will also open its working studios and galleries to those who want to experience the four founders' creating glass work, sculptures and paintings.

EastSquare ArtWorks' historical up-fit of an old bakery factory has brought the excitement of contemporary art and design to the historic beauty of downtown Salisbury, home of the Waterworks Visual Arts Center. The first floor of the 20,000 square foot building features gallery and studio space, while the second floor houses the sophisticated urban lofts the artists call home. The project has received three awards for historic preservation, restoration and adaptive-reuse from the City of Salisbury and the State of North Carolina.

No other organization in the Southeast combines a historically renovated living/learning/ studio/gallery space with an emerging center for art & design. EastSquare ArtWorks' working studios, galleries, and arts incubator is the brainchild of Michael and Connie Baker, Syed Ahmad and Whitney Peckman, four nationally established artists and entrepreneurs who relocated to Salisbury in 2006 from California, Colorado and Malaysia.

In addition to the Six Sculptors exhibit, EastSquare ArtWorks two galleries will feature the works of its four founding members during May 2008. The exhibit will feature Syed Ahmad's fused-glass paintings, Whitney Peckman's painted vessel-sculptures, Connie Baker's contemporary and traditional paintings, and Michael Baker's large-scale abstract stainless-steel welded sculptures. "Friends of ESA" will also have their work on display, but that will be constantly changing.
