Fish or Cut Bait Gallery on Edisto Island, SC, Offers Summertime Exhibit

Here on what used to be the Land of Cotton, Fish or Cut Bait Gallery on Edisto Island, SC, will kick off its season honoring Beaufort, SC, artist Mac Rogers, with a rhapsodic remembrance of George Gershwin. The Summertime - And the Livin' is Easy, art show begins on May 24 and continues through July 31, 2008. Other artists featured in the show will be John Henry Tecklenburg, 16, a promising young artist from Daniel Island (Charleston, SC), and Charleston, SC, jewelry designer Sharon McLean.

"These three artists embody in their works the essence of the easy 'summertime' living we Edistonians enjoy almost all year,' says Brailsford Foster, owner of the gallery, which this year celebrates its seventh anniversary.

Rogers, a former Delta Airlines pilot, was a part-time resident of the Beaufort area since 1989, and began living there in 2003. In 1964, he worked at the old Edistonian general store when it was owned by his uncle. Having learned the island intimately, many of his landscapes, especially those of coastal settings, are inspired by memories of Edisto.

Sharon McLean began her trademark Zola Jewelry in 1997, when she returned south from studying sculpture in New York City. A South Carolina boutique owner saw McLean wearing one of her designs, placed an order and Zola Jewelry was born. Her work features semiprecious stones, freshwater pearls, shells and vintage glass beads in an eclectic assortment with an organic feel inspired by nature.

Young John Tecklenburg, first introduced to the public in 2006 by the Fish or Cut Bait Gallery, has since sold numerous paintings, with his first commission coming from Father Francis Kline at Mepkin Abbey. His oil on canvas for the commission is called The Road to Mepkin, and started him on a career mentored by Foster, who says "It's hard for me to put him in a style, he has his own. But I love the way he sees and translates what he sees."

Tecklenburg's father, a talented musician who often plays for openings and events at the gallery, had a hand in launching his son's career by allowing him to tag along as a youngster.
