Hodges Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Offers Works by Babette Herschberger

Hodges Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will present the work of Babette Herschberger in her first solo show with the gallery. The exhibit opens on May 2 and continues through June 27, 2008. The exhibition, titled Portals, is imbued with a rich sense of balance and well being, offering the viewer a door, or entry, into each painting.

Herschberger offered the following comments about her work: "My work is very much about process. The process is one of action/reaction. My approach is very intuitive; there are no sketches to work from, little predetermined choice of color. Born of spontaneity, the work is a reflection of myself at the time of its creation. A deliberate sense of order and pace is achieved through color interaction, repetitive elements, hand-drawn grid lines, and loose geometric shapes."

"The paint application is lush, sometimes glowing, with incised lines yielding a glimpse of underlying color or an overlay of thin paint that is permitted to trail down the surface. There is energy in these works, playing around the edges or emerging in the center, urging the eye to look deeper."

Herschberger was born in St. Joe, IN. She graduated from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale with honors in 1984, and maintains a studio in Miami, FL. Herschberger's works are in private collections in Austria, Belgium, Canada, England, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and throughout the United States. Previous exhibitions have included Art Basel, Miami Beach, AAF Contemporary Art Fair, New York, Art Expo New York, in addition to various museum and gallery exhibitions.
