Waterfront Gallery in Charleston, SC, Offers Works by Bill Oplinger

Waterfront Gallery in Charleston, SC, is presenting the exhibition, Scenes from the Lowcountry, featuring watercolors and oils by Bill Oplinger, on view through May 31, 2008.

A retired music professor from the College of Charleston, Oplinger has been painting watercolors since his high school days, but it is only in the last several years that he has been able to concentrate on painting regularly and showing his work. His favorite subjects are landscapes, with emphasis on trees, flowers, and other plants. He is often found viewing the marshes around Charleston and the Lowcountry.

Sometimes Oplinger takes photographs, and sometimes just observes and absorbs the imagery of the scenery. He then takes these mental paintings back to the studio and translates them onto paper through the medium of watercolor.

Oplinger says, "I have always delighted in the transparency of watercolors. Their vibrancy, their free flow and the intermixing of colors on the paper never fail to excite me. Now I am excited about learning to accomplish the same things through the medium of oil paint. The way oil paint goes onto canvas or paper is entirely different from watercolor. I love the demands made by the process of learning a new painting technique."

"I enjoy the challenge of recreating the images of the Lowcountry into a painting that I can share with others," adds Oplinger. "That, to me, is the ultimate reward of painting - the appreciation of my interpretation of color and light and scenic views of Charleston. I am always excited when the weather permits me to be outdoors painting. Plein aire painting brings its own challenges of working quickly to capture the moment before the light value changes or the shadows shift. And, as I recently learned in an outdoor class, to keep the wind from blowing my easel into the water! I work to project the mood of a scene that I am painting as well as the visual image."
