Cabarrus Arts Council in Concord, NC, Features Exhibition of Decorative and Functional Works

A new exhibition entitled, Generation to Generation: Folk Art Collectibles and Fine-Crafted Heirlooms, featuring decorative and functional works, from quilts to dulcimers to floor cloths to clay animals, is on display through June 4, 2009, at the Arts Council Galleries in Concord, NC.

The exhibition includes artwork created by 15 artists including: Kings Pottery of North Carolina's well-known Seagrove community, featuring face jugs, wood-fired salt-glazed works, grape and dogwood vases and colorful functional pottery made by Terry and Anna King; Crystal King Pottery of Seagrove including religious political and animal themes, by Terry and Anna King's daughter; Bill Hickman of Raleigh, NC, including welded steel masks, animals and people; and Elia Bizzari of Pittsboro, NC, featuring chairs crafted using only hand tools and centuries-old techniques.

The exhibit also features works by Michael Brown of Grantsboro, NC, including the classic British stick chair, the Windsor, as interpreted by a native Brit; Brad Smith of Pennsylvania, featuring ax handle stools and pitchfork tables; Archie Smith of Mount Pleasant, NC, including musical instruments including Appalachian dulcimers, bowed psalteries and plucked psalteries; Charles Farrar of Concord with turned wood vessels by the artist whose work has been displayed in the US Embassy in Madagascar; and Kathy Cooper of Winston-Salem, NC, featuring handcrafted floor cloths by the artist whose work is owned by Joanne Woodward, Henry Winkler and Jim Palmer.

And finally, the exhibit has works by Susan Webb Lee of Asheville, NC, with one-of-a-kind quilts featuring bold use of color and intuitive design; Marie-Helene Lawler Grabman of Alexandria, VA, featuring traditional Swiss-German scherenschnitte (scissor cuttings) with elements of collage; Kathrin Weber with hand-woven and dyed blankets, throws and bags; Jerry Jackson of Rocky Mount, NC, including assemblages constructed with found objects depicting the historical preservation of childhood memories in the rural South; and Ginger Spangler of Liberty, NC, featuring collages and mixed media compositions that reflect the stories often found in families and the importance of oral history in the rural South.
