Conn Gallery in Landrum, SC, Features Landscape Exhibition

The Conn Gallery in Landrum, SC, is presenting the exhibition, Landscapes in the Carolinas and Beyond, featuring works by Harrison Haynes, Eula La Croix, Kimberly Levi, Stephanie S. Pettit, and Jim Shackelford. The exhibit is on view through July 11, 2003.

Harrison Haynes was born and raised in the Piedmont area of North Carolina. He attended the Rhode Island School of Design and received a BFA in painting in 1999. Returning to NC, Haynes began painting figuratively, drawing from images from childhood, as well as the environment surrounding him. Moving to Brooklyn, he explored using watercolors in small works on paper, which he still does today. Haynes' work has been in exhibits in California, Bologna, Italy, Pennsylvania, and Tryon, NC. He currently works and lives in Manhattan.

Eula La Croix, a native of Kentucky, has lived in the Carolinas since 1976. She studied art at Nazareth College (KY) and at the Cincinnati Art Academy. La Croix has worked in all mediums, but her favorites are watercolors and pastels. She has taught art classes for Jefferson Co., KY Parks and Rec, in their county schools, at the Spartanburg Museum of Art, and in her own studio. La Croix's work ranges from landscapes to still lives to figures to animals, and has been in dozens of selected exhibitions from New York to the Carolinas. Her pieces are included in dozens of permanent collections, both private and corporate. Eleven of La Croix's paintings were purchased for the permanent collection at the Doctor's Memorial Hospital in Spartanburg, SC. La Croix was also voted Artist of the Year in Anderson County, SC, in 2000.

Kimberly Levi graduated from Camden County Technical School in New Jersey with a degree in graphic arts. After moving to North Carolina in 1986, she began painting en plein air with alkyd oils and pastels. Levi's work has been shown in numerous galleries in NC, Oregon, and Colorado. Her paintings also appear in private and corporate collections in New Jersey, PA, the extreme western states and throughout the southeast. Levi is also a member of the Seven artist alliance in Asheville, NC.

Stephanie S. Pettit resides in Greer, SC. Having watercolorist Hubert Shuptrine as her father, she grew up around art and other artists' influence. Pettit studied at the Atlanta College of Art, then graduated from Appalachian State University with a BA in Art. Since college, Pettit's concentration has been in graphic design; freelancing for ad agencies and specializing in art for children's apparel. In the past few years she has leaned more towards watercolor painting, using the dry brush technique, as her passion. Pettit paints animals and people in intimate detail, and in their home environments, with a great sense of humor and zeal.

Jim Shackelford, a Georgia native, attended Georgia State University's school of business and then worked leasing trucks for 30 years in Atlanta. He then turned to painting in his semi- retirement, and has never looked back. Shackelford started in oils, painting landscapes and still lives. Recently he's used acrylics to explore impressionistic and more abstract styles. His paintings explode with color, which he uses with bold strokes and a vibrant palette. Shackelford is a self-taught artist, using workshops and classes as tools along the way. He's exhibited in New York, Bonn, Germany, and all over the Southeast.
