The Sumter Gallery of Art in Sumter, SC, Features Retrospective by Marcelo Novo

( En Español )

The Sumter Gallery of Art in Sumter, SC, is featuring the artwork of internationally recognized artist Marcelo Novo. The exhibition will be on view through July 7, 2003.

Novo was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and moved to Columbia, SC, in 1992 to continue his education and to further his art career. The exhibition, Diez Años, Ten Years, 1992-2002, will feature Novo's artwork that was completed during the past ten years and has been dedicated to his late father who passed away earlier this year.

"Marcelo's work is quite unique and very distinctive," states Peggy Chilcutt, Artistic Director of the Sumter Gallery of Art, "the work is accessible on many levels and can be enjoyed by everyone. We are excited that Marcelo has decided to include several "installations" in this body of work, art patrons throughout South Carolina and especially Sumter will be provided with a special opportunity to view the scope and range of Marcelo's work with this exhibition."

Interestingly, Novo's first public art exhibition in the United States was held in Sumter during 1993 at the University of South Carolina Sumter Campus.

Novo was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1963. He graduated as a Profesor Nacional de Bellas Artes from Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes "Prilidiano Pueyrredon" (Buenos Aires, Argentina), received a Master's degree from the University of South Carolina and taught art at Benedict College from 1995 to 1998. His art has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout the United States and abroad, including the Centro Cultural Recoleta, in Buenos Aires, Argentina; The Deland Museum of Art in Deland, FL; the Cinque Gallery in New York; and the South Carolina State Museum in Columbia, SC. In addition, his work is in public and corporate collections, including those of the South Carolina State Arts Collection, Computer Sciences Corporation, the Cultural Council of Richland & Lexington Counties in South Carolina and the White House Christmas Ornaments Collection.

Novo is the recipient of numerous awards and honors; has received grants from the South Carolina Arts Commission; and was a scholar-in-residence in the Faculty Resource Network Summer Program at New York University. Recently, he was selected and participated in the Artists Retreat at Pritchards Island in Beaufort, SC. He lives and works as a full-time artist in Columbia, SC.

Novo uses a method of creation called Automatism. This method gives the artist unlimited creative freedom allowing images to flow freely from the subconscious to compose the artwork. Novo's work has its roots in Latin America and is also influenced by European Surrealism. Diverse recurrent symbols appear in Novo's work which are closely related to a Latin American culture and heritage.
