Waterfront Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Martha "Mott" Kornahrens

Martha Sutcliff Kornahrens is the featured artist for June at the Waterfront Gallery in Charleston, SC. Her current works are entitled Special Times-Special Places. "Mott" Kornahrens has been drawing and painting since her childhood. A former nurse practitioner, she left her nursing career to pursue her love of art. In the eighties, she began taking formal art lessons from various instructors. The things she learned from her first instructor, Dong Kingman of San Francisco, still influence her work today. As her art career expanded, Kornahrens began taking additional instruction from locally and nationally known artists. However, after taking collage classes from Gerald Brommer of California and Polly Hammett of Texas, she fell in love with the medium and began to adapt it to her own special style. Kornahrens' subject matter is mostly people in various situations that amuse or fascinate her and collage seems to express this best.

Kornahrens says, "Art doesn't imitate life; it relives it. It triggers a memory of some moment in time to share, especially the good, the warm and the wonderful. My paintings elicit a smile from my audience and this is what I like."

All of Kornahrens' paintings are signed simply "Mott," the name she is most known by and that fits her whimsical style.
