Lowcountry Artists Ltd. Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Joni Purk

Lowcountry Artists Ltd. Gallery in Charleston, SC, proudly presents a new show by Joni Purk entitled Discovering the Carolinas: Through an Artist's Eyes. The exhibit of oil paintings will run from June 1-30, 2007.

Born in Rochester, MI, Purk relocated to Dayton/Cincinnati, OH, area in her early twenties where she spent the majority of her painting career until relocating to the Carolinas in early 2006. The move provided the artist with new landscapes, new cityscapes - new subject matter. The exhibit will offer the viewer the opportunity to experience the artist's first impressions of the Carolinas including Charleston and the surrounding Lowcountry with cityscapes, landscapes and figurative paintings in oil.

This new subject matter, in itself was exhilarating, but Purk soon discovered the need to adjust her color palette from the Midwest landscape. Sunsets were more vibrant - cityscapes a more saturated color and new wildlife offered the artist a chance to play with color. Carolina marshes were studied with enthusiasm and she grasped this opportunity to explore with a paintbrush. An award-winning artist for over 25 years, Purk embraces these changes with a strong presence of personal style.

"My process remains constant. I am committed to producing the best quality of work with each painting. When asked what my favorite subject or my favorite painting is, I can honestly respond with 'the one I am currently working on'," says Purk.

Having studied with the late Midwestern artist, Gene Woods, for over a decade, Purk's oil paintings are created in a traditional layering process. She plans a composition, and then builds up color, depth, highlights, and shadows until the mood or feeling she wants to convey is achieved.

Sketching on site and then photographing the composition, Purk generally finishes her paintings in her studio with the layering process. Plein aire (on site) painting is another passion of the artist and these paintings tend to find their way into her collections.

Tagged the "Artist of Diversity" by many in the art world, the artist refuses to limit her subject matter. Purk feels her strongest paintings are those she has the strongest connection with at that moment in time. The artist's works can be found in private and corporate collections throughout the United States and Europe.
