SIZL Gallery Reopens in Southern Village in Chapel Hill, NC

On of the area's most innovative artist is re-opening SIZL Gallery on June 8, 2007, in Southern Village in Chapel Hill, NC. Karen Shelton's new SIZL Gallery will be at 410 Market Street, Suite 312. In addition to the gallery, Shelton is displaying her gallery's works in the ground floor lobby of the 410 Market Street building.

Featured will be metal work by Janice Rieves, Brian Plaster and Leo Gaev, with dining tables, lamps and more. Anna Podris is returning from New York with a new group of paintings, and Shelton will have her new oils on canvas.

Shelton was last in the local news in Jan. 2007. Two former clients bought her space in Carrboro, NC, and gave her 30 days to vacate.

"With the help of friends, I packed up everything and moved it all to a friend's basement, with no clue as to what would happen next," Shelton said.

"A month later, I saw this time as the vacation I had been dreaming of, living in a friend's house bordering Duke Forest and falling in love with her twin toddlers. Then the next miracle happened," she said.

John Fugo, manager and co-developer of the village center in Southern Village, invited Shelton to join the merchants on Market Street.

"He presented a wonderful idea for using the 410 lobby and a small gallery space. He wanted me to do what I had done in Carrboro for the art scene in Southern Village," Shelton said.

Shelton, in 1994, spearheaded the Chapel Hill/Carrboro 2nd Friday Art Walk, which helped get this area voted as the number 13 art destination in the nation. She single-handedly curated more than 70 shows, featuring top local artists, as well as artists from France, Korea, German, Macedonia and Cameroon.

"We very much want the arts here in Southern Village," said Fugo. "We schedule movies, concerts and other performing arts on our stage and green regularly, but we welcome the visual arts program that Karen will bring."

Shelton will organize art events for the green, inviting artists from both Orange and Chatham Counties. "My goal is for Southern Village to be known as the 15-501 Gateway to the Arts," she said.

In addition, Shelton will teach painting classes at Market Street Books and coordinate the rental and use of the 410 Lobby and Gallery for special receptions, parties and events.
